Mineral resources are of considerable significance to the economic, technological, and social development. They are necessary for the manufacturing processes, as well as for obtaining final products in several industries (metallurgy, metalworking and electrical engineering, construction, energy, traffic).

As an economic activity, mining covers exploitation, i.e., extraction of minerals (ore material), which can be found in solid, liquid or gas state in nature, and preparation of crude unprocessed material for sale (crushing, grinding, separation, ore enrichment).
Mining in our country has a tradition since the Middle Ages, but a more considerable development takes place following World War I with the lead and zinc mine Zletovo and the chrome mine Radusha. Today, there are several mines for metallic and non-metallic minerals, which use surface and underground extraction. Mining accounts for roughly 2% of the created value added in the overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and contributes with around 3.5% in the total exports of the country.
According to the latest statistics, the sector Mining and Quarrying covers 0.3% of the total number of active business entities in the country or 198 companies. Most of these companies or 65.1% are micro-companies with 1-9 employees, while large companies with over 250 employees account for 2% of the total number.
The number of employees in the sector amounts to 9,392 people, whereas the average net salary per employee is MKD 41,248.
